Eat A Good Egg this Easter!
I have a love-hate relationship with Easter. I love the time off, I appreciate the religious significance (although I don’t consider myself to be ‘religious’, rather, ‘spiritual’) and I even quite like the thought of Easter Bunnies running around with beautifully painted eggs in wicker baskets. What I HATE however, is the fact that much of the human population use it to line the pockets of large food manufacturers (that have no interest in our health and wellbeing, only $!) and stuff themselves full of ‘food products’ (i.e. by-products of ‘real’ food) that inevitably fuels cravings, overeating, mood swings and can lead to long-term degenerative diseases. Now doesn’t that make me sound like a sour puss? Let me explain…

I love chocolate as much as the next person and I truly believe in its antioxidant properties. Get it in to you! Where I come unstuck is that what most people believe is ‘chocolate’ really isn’t chocolate at all!
Cacao is our #1 Superfood with more antioxidants than any other food…YES, even more than red wine!
The ‘chocolate’ the general population is familiar with is what David Wolfe refers to as the ‘pharmaceutical version’ of chocolate and what a jeweller might refer to as the cubic zirconia of diamonds. If you are munching down on Cadbury or Nestle’s finest this Easter…YOU’VE BEEN CONNED! IT’S NOT THE REAL DEAL! The ‘chocolate’ you are eating (i.e. cocoa) is a refined ‘part’ of the cacao bean that has been mixed with lots of other cheap, nasty and highly processed products added to it like white sugar, milk solids, etc. You are barely getting any antioxidants (although I am sure the manufacturers would do a good job of convincing you otherwise) and because our brains don’t have any receptors for the large amount of added sugar to tell us we are full or what an earth our body is meant to do with it, you eat more than you should and it inevitably ends up on your butt and thighs…and it doesn’t discriminate by age or gender either!
Here’s a really good example. Take Cadbury’s Dairy Milk Chocolate and check out what’s in it:
Ingredients: Full Cream Milk, Sugar, Cocoa Mass, Cocoa Butter, Milk Solids, Emulsifiers (Soya Lecithin, 476), Flavours. May contain traces of Nuts. Milk Chocolate contains Cocoa Solids 26%, Milk Solids 28%
So in short, you are downing milk from ‘who knows where’ with ‘who knows what’ in it (if you are not sure about what goes in to commercially made milk, check out this book: ‘Nourishing Traditions’ – a great read!), refined white sugar (or even worse, brown sugar – that’s right, despite the name ‘brown’ sugar is actually worse than ‘white’!), a bunch of chocolate by-products (i.e. cocoa), artificial flavouring and emulsifiers (that’s the stuff that makes it solid). Sounds pretty wrong doesn’t it?
Now look at the ingredients of one of our favourite ‘real’ chocolate bars (some of you might have been lucky enough to win some of these in our launch competition), Loving Earth’s Luvju Coconut Mylk Bar:
Notice that the ingredient list is fairly short and it is ALL ‘real’ food. Although cacao nibs (i.e. the bean with the shell removed) are used rather than the whole bean, you are still getting significant antioxidant properties because of the large amount of theobromine in them that widens the blood vessels (so you get more oxygen in your body) and stimulates the heart and helps you excrete toxins. Also, because our brains have receptors for these ingredients you are unlikely to go back for more, you will feel satisfied! I know which one I would rather eat! (It also just so happens to be Vegan )
So if you were thinking of running out to clear the shelves of your nearest supermarket or department store tomorrow and buy up some Easter eggs for Sunday, think again and get to your nearest Health/Wholefoods store. If they don’t stock Loving Earth chocolate, any reputable retailer is likely to have a similar brand. The most important thing is to check the ingredients. Perhaps this Easter it is time to be a little more ‘conscious’ and break the chain of your usual blowout. Swap the ‘Crème Egg’ for something better for your body but without missing out on the chocolaty goodness.
- We don’t have shares in Loving Earth (although we wish we did!) nor are we part of any kind of affiliate program with them, we just really believe in what they are doing to make the world a better place!
- Don’t get fooled by Cadbury’s Fair Trade logos on their products. They do this to put a ‘tick in the sustainability box’ but yet make products that are contributing to food addiction and disease – what a contradiction!
